Midplains Produce is located in rural Elgin on the property of Holdt Farms Inc. Our mother company has been growing corn and soybeans in this part of Nebraska since the early 1980’s when it was founded. Rachel’s grandfather Ernest was farming this land long before that. In 2010 the farm added crop insurance to diversify and reduce financial risk. In 2013 Richard wanted to expand into the precision ag technology field and invited Ryan and Tiffany to join him and Midplains Ag was founded.
Our hydroponic system is all contained within a shipping container from the company Freight Farm. We can grow a consistent crop of lettuce, fresh herbs, and other leafy greens year-round for your dinner table.
Our hydroponic system is automated, which means all its functions are controlled by computer software. We check in daily to make sure all the systems are working, that there’s enough water in the tanks, and to do tasks like cleaning, adding nutrients, calibrating monitors, seeding new plants, transplanting, and harvesting. The nutrients we use are specifically designed to use in hydroponic systems to keep the plants growing well and healthy. The inside of the Freight Farm is climate controlled, which means we can keep ideal conditions for whatever crop we want to grow. There are four growing walls of vertical panels with 22 grow panels on each wall.
